Grade Calculator
Add each assessment with its score and weight to calculate your overall weighted grade and an approximate letter grade.
How It Works
Each assessment contributes to your overall grade in proportion to its weight:
Overall Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)
The overall percentage is then mapped to a letter grade using this default scale — note that grading scales vary by institution, so check your syllabus for the exact one that applies to you:
- A = 90–100
- B = 80–100
- C = 70–100
- D = 60–100
- F = below 60
Example
Homework 85% (weight 20%), Midterm 78% (weight 30%), Final 90% (weight 50%): Overall Grade = (85×20 + 78×30 + 90×50) ÷ 100 = 85.4%, which is a Letter Grade: B.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do the weights need to add up to 100%?
- It's common practice, but this calculator normalizes by the total weight you enter, so it will still produce a correct weighted average even if your weights don't sum to exactly 100%.
- What letter grade scale does this calculator use?
- By default: A = 90–100, B = 80–89, C = 70–79, D = 60–69, F = below 60. Grading scales vary by institution, so always check your syllabus for the official scale.
- Can I use this for a single test instead of a full course?
- Yes — for a single assessment, use the Exam Percentage Calculator instead, which is built specifically for one score out of a total.
- How many assessments can I add?
- Use '+ Add Assessment' to add as many rows as your course has — homework, quizzes, midterms, finals and anything else you want included.
